Legislators Honored for Commitment to Safe and Supportive Schools

Senator Sal DiDomenico, TLPI Director Susan Cole and Representative Ruth Balser at “Celebrating Voices”.

On October 16th, TLPI was celebrated for the 10th anniversary and distribution of over 110,000 copies of volumes 1 and 2 of the publication of Helping Traumatized Children Learn at the Massachusetts Advocates for Children’s “Celebrating Voices” event, honoring Charlotte Golar Richie. Representative Ruth Balser, and Senator Sal DiDomenico were recognized with Legislative Champion awards for their “leadership as a champions of Safe and Supportive Schools and steadfast commitment to improving school success for all children in the Commonwealth.” The Safe and Supportive Schools statute was passed in 2014 and this year, the Safe and Supportive Schools line item was fully funded at $500,000. This was largely due to the tireless leadership of Rep. Balser who served as the lead House sponsor, and Sen. DiDomenico who served as the lead Senate sponsor. “There are three things, as a society, that we have a responsibility to do: educate our children, care for them and keep them safe…The children of this state benefit from the work of everyone in this room,” Sen. DiDomenico said while accepting his award.

Massachusetts Advocates for Children is an independent and effective voice for children who face significant barriers to equal educational and life opportunities, particularly those who have disabilities, are low income and/or are racially, culturally, or linguistically diverse. TLPI is a partnership with MAC and Harvard Law School.
