In previous blog posts, we shared information, tools and resources for use in creating trauma-sensitive schools. This month, we are excited to share with you an additional tool for getting started on the journey to trauma-sensitivity in your school. TLPI Training Director, Joel Ristuccia, Ed.M., recently had the opportunity to present a webinar on creating safe and supportive learning environments for all students for the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Safe and Supportive Schools grantees.
The webinar, titled Bridging Knowledge to Practice in Creating Safe and Supportive Learning Communities for all students focuses on how to create such learning environments and how to involve the school team in identifying their school’s urgent priorities and taking actions that are guided by the attributes of a trauma-sensitive school.
The underlying concepts that are key to creating safe and supportive schools are presented here including:
- Understanding of the prevalence of trauma
- Understanding of the impacts of trauma on learning , including the impacts of trauma on academic performance, behavior and relationships
- The attributes of a trauma-sensitive school
- The need for a whole school approach to support all students
